B Vitamins and Energy: When B6, B12 and Folate Actually Help
B vitamins help your body turn food into energy and make red blood cells, but they are not a stimulant. If you are low in B12 or folate, correcting it can lift tiredness. If your levels are normal, extra B vitamins are unlikely to raise your energy. JellyRock’s 2-gummy serving gives B6 1.4 mg, B12 2 mcg and folate 1,000 mcg DFE.

“Energy boosting nutrients”: what that means
A JellyRock listing image says “energy boosting nutrients.” On the label, the nutrients behind that phrase are three B vitamins: B6, B12 and folate. They show up in almost every energy drink, energy shot and men’s supplement for a reason: they are genuinely involved in how your body makes energy.
But “involved in energy” and “gives you energy” are not the same thing. This article explains the difference, so you know what to expect from a B-vitamin gummy.
What B vitamins do in the body
Your body gets energy from food: carbohydrates, fats and proteins. Turning them into usable fuel takes many chemical steps, and many of those steps need B vitamins as helpers.
| Vitamin | Main jobs | Adult need (RDA) |
|---|---|---|
| B6 | Protein metabolism, making neurotransmitters, red blood cells | 1.3 mg (1.7 mg men over 50) |
| B12 | Red blood cells, nerve health, DNA | 2.4 mcg |
| Folate | DNA and red blood cells; works with B12 | 400 mcg DFE |
Think of B vitamins like spark plugs. An engine with worn spark plugs runs badly, and new ones fix it. But adding extra spark plugs to a healthy engine does not make it faster (NIH Office of Dietary Supplements, “Vitamin B6: Fact Sheet for Health Professionals”).
Who is likely to be low
Most American adults get enough B6 and folate from food, partly because U.S. flour and cereals are fortified with folic acid. Vitamin B12 is where shortfalls are more common (NIH Office of Dietary Supplements, “Vitamin B12: Fact Sheet for Health Professionals”).
Adults over 50
Less stomach acid means less B12 absorbed from food.
Vegans and some vegetarians
B12 comes almost only from animal foods.
Long-term metformin or acid reducers
These can lower B12 absorption.
Gut conditions or surgery
Crohn’s, celiac disease and weight-loss surgery affect absorption.
Low B12 causes tiredness, weakness, pale skin, shortness of breath and, later, numbness or tingling in the hands and feet. It is easy to test for with a blood test.
JellyRock’s amounts, in context
Per 2-gummy serving, JellyRock lists vitamin B6 1.4 mg, vitamin B12 2 mcg and folate 1,000 mcg DFE (600 mcg folic acid). Against current Daily Values, that is about 82%, 83% and 250%, even though the jar prints 88%, 100% and 100%.
- Vitamin B61.4 mg88%check
- Vitamin B122 mcg100%check
- Folate1,000 mcg DFE100%check
- Iodine100 mcg67%matches
“Worked out” uses the current FDA Daily Values: B6 1.7 mg, B12 2.4 mcg, folate 400 mcg DFE, iodine 150 mcg (U.S. Food and Drug Administration, “Daily Value on the Nutrition and Supplement Facts Labels”).
So B6 and B12 are roughly a day’s worth, like a basic multivitamin. Folate is two and a half days’ worth. For someone low in B12 because of diet, 2 mcg a day helps; for someone low because of poor absorption, doctors often use much larger doses or injections.
Will you feel more energetic?
| Your situation | Likely effect of a B-vitamin gummy |
|---|---|
| Normal B vitamin levels | Probably nothing you can feel |
| Mildly low from diet | May help over weeks |
| Low B12 from poor absorption | May not be enough; see a doctor |
| Tired from short sleep | No effect on the cause |
| Tired from low thyroid, anemia or sleep apnea | No effect on the cause |
Energy drinks often pair B vitamins with caffeine. The caffeine is what you feel. JellyRock has no caffeine, so any effect would be slow and quiet, not a buzz.
The folic acid and B12 catch
Folic acid and B12 work together. A shortage of either can cause a type of anemia with large red blood cells. Here is the catch: taking a lot of folic acid can correct that anemia even when the real problem is low B12, while the nerve damage from low B12 keeps going (NIH Office of Dietary Supplements, “Folate: Fact Sheet for Health Professionals”).
That is one reason the upper limit for folic acid from supplements is 1,000 mcg a day. JellyRock gives 600 mcg. For most people that is fine, but if you are over 50, vegan or on metformin, ask your doctor to check B12 rather than relying on a gummy.

JellyRock also lists 100 mcg of iodine. Your thyroid uses iodine to make its hormones, which set your body’s pace. Too little iodine can lead to an under-active thyroid, with tiredness, weight gain and feeling cold (NIH Office of Dietary Supplements, “Iodine: Fact Sheet for Health Professionals”).
Iodized salt, dairy, eggs and seafood give most Americans enough iodine. Too much iodine can also upset the thyroid, so people with thyroid conditions or on thyroid medicine should ask a doctor before adding it.
Food sources of B6, B12 and folate
| Vitamin | Good food sources |
|---|---|
| B6 | Chickpeas, tuna, salmon, chicken, potatoes, bananas, fortified cereals |
| B12 | Clams, beef liver, fish, meat, eggs, dairy, fortified cereals and nutritional yeast |
| Folate | Leafy greens, beans, peas, asparagus, oranges, and enriched bread, pasta and rice (folic acid) |
A varied diet that includes some animal foods usually covers all three. If you eat no animal foods at all, B12 is the one to plan for, through fortified foods or a supplement, because plants do not provide it reliably.
A better way to fix low energy
Sleep first
Aim for 7–9 hours at regular times; loud snoring needs a check.
Move daily
Walking and strength training raise energy over weeks.
Eat regular meals
Protein, whole grains, fruit and vegetables cover most B vitamins.
Get tested if tired for weeks
Ask about B12, iron, thyroid, blood sugar and vitamin D.
Then consider a supplement
A B-vitamin gummy is a reasonable top-up, not a fix.
The bottom line
B6, B12 and folate are real “energy metabolism” vitamins, and JellyRock contains useful amounts of them. They help when you are low; they do not add energy when you are not. Folate is higher than the jar suggests, at 250% of the Daily Value.
If you feel tired most days, get checked for the common causes. If the tests are normal, better sleep and daily movement will do more than any vitamin gummy.
